Questions Frequently Asked About Hypnosis...

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural, altered state of consciousness.Studies have shown most people enter into hypnosis-like trances on their own, several times throughout the day.  For example, when you are engrossed in watching a movie or reading a book, you are in a naturally relaxed and "altered" state. You are focused and only vaguely aware of the activity around you. If you have ever driven from one location to another and realize you have little recollection of the trip itself, you have been in a state of trance. These experiences are a form of a hypnotic trance or a natural, altered state. It is a normal and natural occurrence.

Is Hypnosis just sleep?

Hypnosis is not sleep, although some people get so relaxed in trance that they may fall asleep. This is not a  problem because part of the subconscious mind continues to listen to the voice of the hypnotherapist. In trance, sleeping subjects can still follow instructions such as moving a finger, taking a deep breath, or awakening themselves when they are told to do so.

Can you get 'stuck' in hypnosis?

No, you definitely cannot. If you were hypnotised and the hypnotist just walked away and left you, you would simply bring yourself out of the state whenever you wanted to.

How many Sessions will it take?

Different hypnotherapists have their own ways of approaching different symptoms, depending on their training and experience.  Usually between six and eight sessions might be expected for most issues, but often less are necessary.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Yes, if they want to be. Many people are concerned that they won't be able to go into hypnosis. A good hypnotherapist will put you at ease, answer all your questions and assist you in feeling comfortable enough to relax. When you relax, your subconscious mind is receptive to positive suggestions. When we use this relaxed and "altered" state in a therapeutic fashion, results can be powerful, long lasting and healing!

Can a person be hypnotized against their will?

Hypnosis cannot cause anyone to do something against their will or that contradicts their values. You are more in control when you are in hypnosis than when you are in your normal waking state as your subconscious mind is very alert when you are relaxed. Your subconscious mind protects you and will reject any information that does not meet your needs.

 Is hypnosis safe?

ABSOLUTELY!  The induction of hypnosis is a naturally occurring process.  Hypnosis is a natural state that a person experiences without assistance, many times throughout the course of a day. The American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the British Medical Association approve hypnosis as a viable therapeutic tool.
